Elementary and Kindergarten Teachers (NOC 4032)


Description of the profession

Elementary and kindergarten teachers (usually from kindergarten to Grade 8 - students between 4 and 13 years of age) teach basic subjects such as reading, spelling and mathematics or specialized subjects such as English or French as a second language, in primary, public and private schools.

Elementary and kindergarten teachers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Prepare the material to be taught in accordance with an approved curriculum;
  • Teach students according to a systematic course plan that includes lectures, discussions, audiovisual presentations, and field trips.
  • Coach students in activities targeting their physical, mental and social development and their readiness for school.
  • Distribute and correct homework;
  • Prepare, administer and score exams
  • Assess students’ progress, identify their individual needs and discuss their results with parents and school authorities.
  • Identify learning requirements for each child.
  • Develop and implement remedial programs for students in need of further structure and support.
  • Participate in staff meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops.
  • May supervise teaching interns if required.

Elementary and kindergarten teachers may specialize in areas such as special education and second-language education.
