Secondary School Teacher (NOC 4031)


Description of the profession

Secondary school (high school) teachers (typically Grades 9 to 12—students between 14 and 18 years of age) prepare and deliver general, technical, specialized or vocational training in public or private secondary schools.

Secondary school teachers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Prepare the material to be taught in accordance with an approved curriculum;
  • Teach students according to a systematic course plan that includes lectures, discussions, audiovisual presentations, laboratory, workshop and practical studies.
  • Distribute and correct homework;
  • Prepare, administer and score exams
  • Assess students’ progress, identify their individual needs and discuss their results with parents and school authorities.
  • Develop and implement remedial programs for students in need of further structure and support.
  • Participate in staff meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops
  • May teach or evaluate students enrolled in online or distance-learning courses.
  • May advise students on course choices and personal and professional issues.
  • May supervise teaching interns.

Secondary school teachers may specialize in primary or secondary (major or minor) specialty areas such as mathematics, English, French, special education or second-language education. High School technical and trade teachers may specialize, for example, as hairdressers or automotive mechanics.
